Leadership & Community Impact
In addition to my research, I am committed to fostering effective mentorship, trainee development, and supportive academic environments. My leadership activities focus on identifying challenges that impact student success and working collaboratively with stakeholders to develop practical, evidence-informed solutions that promote positive institutional change.
Effective Mentorship of Racialized Graduate Students (EMRGS)
The Effective Mentorship of Racialized Graduate Students (EMRGS) initiative originated from a 2021 op-ed I authored, My Journey Through Mentorship, reflecting on the importance of mentorship and the experiences of racialized graduate students in academia. The article sparked broader conversations across the University of British Columbia and ultimately led to the development of a funded, university-wide initiative focused on understanding and improving graduate mentorship.
Supported by UBC’s Anti-Racism Initiatives Fund and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, I helped lead the project in partnership with graduate students, faculty, staff, and institutional leaders. Through surveys, focus groups, stakeholder engagement activities, and a university-wide forum attended by more than 70 participants, the initiative gathered insights from over 90 graduate students regarding barriers, facilitators, and opportunities for strengthening mentorship practices.
The project culminated in a final report outlining nine recommendations to enhance graduate mentorship and student success. These findings contributed to ongoing institutional discussions surrounding mentorship, graduate education, and academic belonging at UBC.
